Choose The Right Tile

Choose The Right TileShopping for flooring is not an easy thing to do. There are so many variables that can come into play. Of course, if you’re reading this article you have already taken the first step; picking out the type of flooring you want. With all of the different types of flooring choices available in the market place today this can be the hardest one, so congrats!

Now that you know you are looking for natural stone tile the search for your perfect stone can begin! You can start by googling the places in your area that sell natural stone tile. The easiest way to tell the quality and color of natural stone is to see it in person. It is also okay to buy your tile on-line but beware when doing so! Make sure to look on-line for reviews and pertinent company information. Look to see what rating the better business gives the company. Also, request pictures and samples of the product up-front before purchasing anything. It’s important that you know the quality of the stone you are getting before making a purchase. When it comes to natural stone, price is not always an indicator of quality. When looking over your samples, make sure there are no large holes within the stone where you can see partially or all the way through the tile. If you are looking at Honed and filled tiles you will want to look for large spots (over a quarter in diameter) that were clearly filled in. Too large or too many filled spaces could indicate an inferior stone.

Next, you want to decide on the type of finish you would like your floor to have. There are four common types of finishes you have to choose from. Tumbled, brushed and chiseled, filled and honed, and polished.

Tumbled tiles are put through a process called tumbling where they are placed into a big drum with other rocks and sand and tumbled about to create a naturally worn, rustic look with pitting easily visible to the naked eye. They are unfilled and smooth to the touch and are one of the most common types of travertine flooring sold in the market today for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Brushed and chiseled tiles get their finish from being brushed with a wire brush and then chiseled along the edges, either by hand or by machine. Brushed tiles are also unfilled and smooth to the touch. Although, brushing creates a smoother finish than tumbling and can sometimes bring out more of the natural luster of the stone. This finish can also be used for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Honed and filled tiles are put through a process where the tiles are filled with colored cement and other prices of travertine stone and then dried and cleaned to create that filled and honed appearance that you love so much. Once finished, these stones will have a beautiful, smooth, matte finish.

Polished tiles are first filled with colored cement and other pieces of travertine stone and dried and cleaned just like honed and filled tiles. The difference is that instead of honing the tiles to a matte finish they are polished to create a smooth, shiny surface.

Your third and final step is to choose your color. This part can be the most fun but keep in mind that natural stone varies in color, sometimes dramatically. No two stones are the same, which is why we love natural stone so much.
